There is a sense that people from all cultures feel we are good enough to deserve some sort of favourable treatment in this life and a place in heaven.
There are lots of expressions of this. It is self-righteousness, and in some ways it helps people to live better lives, but on their own terms, not God’s. He does not want us to measure ourselves against this yardstick, but to recognise that no yardstick is sufficient – that we can only have fellowship with God through him and his work.
