Hell is not where we’re separated from God, but from God’s mercy.
This is something that is real, so real and terrible that it makes sense why God’s son was sent to save those who would trust in him. Jesus spoke more of hell than heaven because he knew its reality and warned against it.
There is a sense in which people choose to be with God, or not, during their lives. At death that choice is made final (see
Jn 3:19 below).But hell is a place where evil is destroyed in the context of God’s justice. If we have witnessed on earth what we perceive to be hell physically, emotionally or spiritually, we know we don't want to be anywhere near it and we know profoundly that its agents should be separated from us forever.
